A CELEBRATION OF THE PEOPLE AND HISTORY OF NORTH MOLTON

"The book is a truly imaginative production and anyone with any links to North Molton will surely want to own a copy."
- Hilary Binding (The Exmoor Magazine)

Ten years after its foundation, the History Society published a book about the village. Entitled "A Celebration of the people and history of North Molton", it was published in 2011 with written contributions from twenty-five locals and edited by Judy Mc Carthy (seen below), Adrian Stone and Jonathan Edmunds. It was truly a time of celebration and a remarkable achievement in which the entire village participated and supported.

The painting for the cover of the book was based upon an original by local International Artist Ken Hildrew, seen here with the framed painting. He is actively involved with the local art group, passing on his skills and insights to younger generations.

The book was launched on Thursday, July 14 in the Old School and more than 100 people attended. Society secretary Larry Klein said: "You could say the book has become a village enterprise, given the variety and number of people who contributed their invaluable memories, stories and photographs. The book conveys the richness of life in the village now, and a flavour of the uniqueness of its past history."

The book features old photographs, tales of the village's mining history and contributions from village folk about farming, church life and school days.

Pupils at the Primary school also contributed to the book. The work of some of the children, a set of photographs of the pupils in 2011 and an outline of the history of the schools both old and new are covered.

The History Society presented a copy to the school library to mark publication in 2011. The photograph on the left shows Christopher Hewetson, Chairman of the Society handing a signed copy to David Grant, Headmaster, with Erin, Hannah, Beth and Lily in the foreground.
